Today the Belize Bureau of Standards (BBS) joins the International Metrology Community in celebrating World Metrology Day (WMD) 2019. WMD is celebrated every year on the 20th May which is the anniversary of the Metre Convention. The Metre Convention is an international agreement signed in 1875 by 17 countries, this agreement gave birth to the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) whose responsibility is the development of the metric system and the coordination of metrology initiatives internationally.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “The International System of Units – Fundamentally Better!” This theme highlights the redefinition of the International System of Units which took place last year on November 18th and comes into effect today 20th May 2019.
In commemoration of WMD 2019 Officers of the BBS appeared on both The Morning Show on Love FM (Belize City) and Rise & Shine Morning Show on Plus TV (Belmopan). In addition to the media appearances, Metrology Officers will be conducting presentations at various High Schools in both Belmopan and Belize City to educate particularly, the Science Majors on Metrology, the redefinition of the SI and its significance.
