Industrial Metrology
Since 2010 the BBS has been working towards advancing metrology in Belize. This would entail extending its work from the legal aspect to the offer of calibration services. This would require ensuring that it has in place the physical infrastructure and the personnel to be able to offer calibration services in a controlled environment. With the assistance from the EU-Belize Rural Development Project II, the BBS would embark on an ambitious journey to install laboratories for basic magnitudes (measurements). This would include mass, volume, temperature, pressure and dimensional/length. The significance of this accomplishment simply means that there now exists the possibility of performing calibration services in Belize across the aforementioned measurements.
Why should public and private entities look to the Bureau for calibration services?
The BBS aims to have its laboratory accredited to ISO 17025 which is the international standard that calibration and testing laboratories are held to. With accreditation, the Bureau’s clients can have the confidence and assurance that the laboratory is operating and performing calibration services that are internationally recognized. The benefits to the clients are that the Bureau, for their particular measurements will serve as the national reference laboratory, most importantly the client will not have the need to ship their equipment abroad to an external laboratory for calibration. This will represent significant savings for its clients since procuring services abroad can be extremely costly.
