Drinking Water Quality (N)

The Committee   is responsible for standardization in the field of services related to the Drinking   Water Quality in Belize, which shall include standards and technical   regulations for the following areas:

  1. i.Registration of production plants and operations;
  2. ii.Regulation of the production, operationdistribution of drinking water
  3. iii.Certification for quality requirements

Development,   evaluation and approval of testing methods, and approved chemicals for the   safe use in water treatment based on WHO guidelines.

  • Specification   for Packaged Water

 

  • Code of   Hygienic Practice for Packaged Water

 

  • Regulation for   Drinking Water Quality
    • To revise   current established national standards/code of hygienic practice for packaged   water.

 

  • To develop   technical regulations to regulate and monitor local water producers and   refilling stations.
  • Active –   completion of technical regulations by end of 2012
 

Electric Cables (N) to serve as mirror   TC for the RTC for Electric Cables

The Caricom Regional Organization for   Standards and Quality (CROSQ) has established a Regional Technical   Sub-Committee (RTSC) for Electrical Cables. Belize   has an obligation to adopt all regional standards developed through this   regional body.   This Committee is responsible for reviewing documents and submitting comments   proposed by the RTSC for use in the development of standards for Electrical   Cables for CARICOM.

Standardization   of electric cables with respect to requirements for constructions, dimensions   and electrical and mechanical properties including the relevant test methods.

The   individual scopes of the standards in the 6-part series are as follows:

 

1.   Electric cables — PVC insulated, non-armoured cables for voltages up to and   including 450/750 V, for electric power, lighting and internal wiring

This   Standard specifies requirements for the construction, dimensions and   mechanical and electrical properties of non-armoured polyvinyl chloride (PVC)   insulated cables for operation at voltages up to and including 450 V a.c. to   earth and 750 V a.c. between conductors, intended for electric power,   lighting and internal wiring.

 

2.   Electric cables — Flexible cords rated up to 300/500 V, for use with   appliances and equipment intended for domestic, office and similar

Environments.

This   Standard specifies requirements for the construction, dimensions and   mechanical and electrical properties of insulated flexible cords

for   operation at voltages up to and including 300 V a.c. to earth and 500 V a.c.   between conductors, intended for use with appliances and equipment in   domestic or similar environments for light or ordinary duty.

 

3.   Electric cables — Flexible cables rated up to 450/750 V, for use with   appliances and equipment intended for industrial and similar environments

This   Standard specifies requirements for the construction, dimensions and   mechanical and electrical properties of insulated flexible cables for

operation   at voltages up to and including 450 V a.c. to earth and 750 V a.c. between   conductors, intended for use with appliances and equipment

in   industrial or similar environments for ordinary or heavy duty.

 

4.   Electric cables — Thermosetting insulated, unarmoured cables for a voltage of   600/1 000 V

This   Standard specifies requirements for construction and describes methods of   test for unarmoured single-core cables with thermosetting

insulation   of rated voltage 600/1 000 V. Cables specified in this standard are intended   for use in fixed installations in industrial areas, buildings and similar applications   but not for direct burial in the ground. The insulation and other components   are suitable to permit operation of the cables at a maximum sustained   conductor temperature of 90 °C and for a maximum short-circuit conductor   temperature of 250 °C.

 

5.   Electric cables — Thermosetting insulated, armoured cables for voltages of   600/1 000 V and 1 900/3 300 V

This   Standard specifies requirements for construction and describes methods of   test for armoured cable with thermosetting insulation of rated voltages 600/1   000 V and 1 900/3 300 V. Cables specified in this standard are intended for   use in fixed installations in industrial areas, buildings and similar   applications.

The   insulation and other components are suitable to permit operation of the   cables at a maximum sustained conductor temperature of 90 °C and for

a   maximum short-circuit conductor temperature of 250 °C.

 

6.   Electric cables — PVC insulated, armoured cables for voltages of 600/1000 V   and 1 900/3 300 V.

This   Standard specifies requirements for construction and describes

methods   of test for armoured cable with PVC insulation of rated voltages

600/1   000 V and 1 900/3 300 V. Cables specified in this standard are intended for   use in fixed installations in industrial areas, buildings and similar applications.   The insulation and other components are suitable to permit operation of

the   cables at a maximum sustained conductor temperature of 70 °C and for a   maximum short-circuit conductor temperature of 160 °C for conductor sizes up   to and including 300 mm2 and 140 °C for conductor sizes greater than 300 mm2.

  • To develop Standards for electric cables which are critical for   ensuring consumer and public safety and to protect consumer from the risk and   subsequent losses associated with installation of faulty electric cables in   buildings. Compliance to these standards will minimize the risk of electric   fires and electrocutions.
  • To develop cable standards which will specify the standardized   dimensions and relevant electrical properties such as conductor resistance,   insulation resistance, flame propagation and test methods which are used to   assess the performance of the cables.
  • To identify mechanical properties this is especially important for   cables which should be capable of bending easily.
  • To harmonize standards for electric cables in the region thereby   serving to facilitate trade by creating common requirements and test methods.   Regional standards would also assist manufacturers in streamlining   production.
  • To establish regional cable standards which are based on the British   or International Standards for cables to assist regional manufacturers to   access extra-regional markets and in the implementation of the EU-CARIFORUM   EPA.
  • Active – TC   for Belize has been established. Belize’s survey on electric cables submitted   to the RTC.
 

Liquid Petroleum Gas (N)

 

 

The   establishment of this committee came as a result of the need to establish   standards/technical regulations for the LPG market in Belize as it relates to   Quality and Safety of the product.

  • Specs for   Marking & Labelling of Gas Cylinders

 

  • Specs for   Filling, handling, storage, transportation and location of portable cylinders   for LPG

 

  • Specs for   inspecting, testing and requalification of LPG cylinders
  • To establish   standards and technical regulations for the Liquid Petroleum Market in Belize   addressing issues associated with quality, plant and equipment, filling   methods that will ensure the health and safety of consumers.
  • Active –   Declaration of Mandatory Standards on Minister’s signature
 

 

  • Commencement of   LPG Implementation Programme

Red Kidney Beans (R)

 

 

The   establishment of this committee came as a result of a proposal submitted by   Belize to develop a regional standard for red kidney beans for which Belize   was awarded the secretariat for Regional Technical Committee for the   development of the Standard for Red Kidney Beans.

  • Dry, threshed, and whole Red Kidney Beans intended   for human consumption and canning.
    • To develop   regional CARICOM standard for Red Kidney Beans for trade facilitation within   CARICOM.
    • Active –   establishment of parameters to address both beans intended for canning and   direct human consumption.
